I'm starting on those top fives today.

First up: Top Five Movies asked by [livejournal.com profile] space_dementia6

5. Oldboy
Maybe not my fifth favourite movie of all time, but in order to make this list varied it fits nicely. It's quite shocking in places and not what you would call relaxing, but it impacted me like not that many other movies have. It's a revenge plot and the final confrontation is stunning and edge-of-your-set stuff from beginning to end.

Do you want revenge, or do you want the truth?

4. The Fall
Stunning and perfect movie. It would be one of my favourites for the imagery alone, but in addition to that it manages to be genuinely emotional. It is also a movie about movies and stories, and their power, which makes it even better for me. Honestly the most visually beautiful film I have ever seen.

It's my story!
Mine too.

3. The Philadelphia Story
This is on this list because of a combination of things: it was one of the very first old screwball comedies I ever saw, which makes it special, it stars Katharine Hepburn AND Cary Grant AND Jimmy Stewart - unique and perfect - and it is also just funny. I think all three of them are at their best here, and I could rewatch it forever because of it.

You going my way, Miss?
That's Miss Goddess to you.
Okay, Miss Goddess To Me

2. Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles
So very pretty, and epic. It's a love story, and a war story - I like a good war narrative as long as the emphasis is on the people. I like it better than Amélie- probably because it feels more genuine (it has its over the top moments too but the story in itself is very real).

ça s'apelle de l'espoir

1. The Painted Veil
FAVOURITE. I am ridiculously attached to this movie, and I am not even sure why. It just manages to get to me like few others do. It is absolutely stunning visually - which, I think you can tell from this list, is something I love in a movie - with the most beautiful Chinese landscapes. It also stars two of my very favourite actors (Edward Norton and Naomi Watts), the music is beautiful, and the story is simple but lovely. I think the story has potential to be melodramatic but in the end it just works for me.

Do you absolutely despise me?
- No. I despise myself. For allowing myself to love you once.

II. I've bought Game of Thrones and I'm really enjoying reading it so far. I will probably share my thoughts when I've finished. I'm trying desperately to avoid spoilers but it is actually quite hard. :/

III. And I've started watching Skins. Three episodes in and I really like it. But I've heard that gen2 is not good at all? Should I skip straight to gen3 or try it? Anyone have any advice?

I. Nice movie picks! :) I haven't watched Old Boy yet though.

III. YAY SKINS! :D
Re generations:
- I love the first generation the most ♥ Love, love, love them!
- The second generation - as far as I could tell reactions were rather mixed? Some people fell head over heals for a certain ship and therefore loved that gen too. I didn't like the ship, but still enjoyed a few characters. Even though I did not really enjoy the third season very much, I did like the fourth season so in the end I was glad I watched all of their episodes too. But I don't think I will rewatch those soon.
- I have only seen a couple of episodes of the third generation but they were promising. Somehow I had the impression that generation was the easiest to like instantly.

You should watch Oldboy! Tbh, I probably would never have seen it myself based on the summary but it was shown as part of the Korean theme in the last zomerfilmcollege, and I fell in love there. :) But it is really good, visually as well as story-wise.

Thanks for the info! Yeah, I don't know about the ships but most people I've heard dislike the second generation a lot so I thought maybe I should just skip s3&4. Maybe I'll just try the first few eps.

YOU HAVE EXCELLENT TASTE. I haven't seen Old Boy, but I love all of the rest!

I haven't watched Gen. 2. I probably will get around to it at some point, though? I don't know.

Thank you! :D
Well, Oldboy isn't for everybody because it is very in-your-face. So I hesitate to rec it because I don't want people to expect something it isn't. But I love it, and I wanted something on my list that wasn't all romance and prettiness. :)

THE FALL! ♥ oh that movie! just every scene in that is pure perfection (but i may be a little biased as a Tarsem and Lee Pace fan XD)
