Review School Reunion
2009-05-02 11:17It's been a while since I've rewatched episodes, but I still know them all inside out of course, especially the s2 ones. I was a bit distracted by the subtitles, actually. I've never seen a DW episode with Dutch subtitles before and it's a really weird feeling. But they were good, usually it annoys me when they interpret something in the wrong way because they don't know the show, but it was all right. Just one complete mistranslation. The strangest thing is the translations to things like Time Lord (Tijdheer?) and The Doctor is always written de Dokter and that just looks WRONG.
So, the episode. I have the same feeling about SR as about Fear Her; It has some great moments and great scenes, but the overall story is horrible. I don't really want to try to remember the plot, or why the giant bat-people were using a small English highschool to achieve their master plan... Or how come no-one noticed several children and teachers disapearing? Anyway, it's DW. I never think about plots, that makes enjoying it a lot easier.
What annoyed me the most, were the children. I generally don't like children acting, and they were really annoying here. Luckily, they weren't always there (unlike in Fear Her ). But they really, really annoy me. Especially in that last scene after the school got blown up. That's really the only moment I had the overwhelming feeling I was watching a kids' show. Which it is, obviously, but usually I don't get that feeling, because there's so much more going on and it's well-written.
What I do like in this episode is the general stuff of course: DT, D/R.
This was David Tennant's first episode (after TCI) and he looks really young. He never has that many freckles again, and his hair looks so long (especially compared to s4 - What happened?). But it has one of my favorite scenes of his acting in Who:
If I don't like it...It will stop.
I like both these actors in this scene, with the pool room as some sort of strange atmosphere. I almost forgot about this scene, but it just reminded me that this show has amazingly talented leads and usually very good guest stars as well.
As Doctor/Rose shipper I like this episode as well, of course because of this scene:
I don't age. I regenerate. But humans decay. You wither and you die.
Imagine watching that happen to someone you...
Breaks my heart. DT has a very good "almost crying but not really" look which makes everyone else cry :p
Another thing I noticed on this rewatch is in the scene where the headmaster is tempting him, he seems so very tempted to take the offer, especially when he says he can keep his companions with him forever. We don't really see his eyeline, so I like to think he was staring at Rose and seriously contemplating it so he wouldn't have to lose her. And in the end, it's Sarah Jane who has to make him see sense, maybe because Rose really wants it to?
And then the ending:Sarah Jane gets set up for her spin-off, and Mickey joins the Tardis. I have to say, I didn't like Rose in that scene. She's harsh on Mickey, not wanting him to see the universe, understand her life, maybe find a new purpose for his, because she wants the Doctor all to herself... But she's obviously still shaken up about recent revelations and the new understanding that she may not be allowed to spend her life with him. And it's not going to get easier anytime soon. Meanwhile, the Doctor lets Mickey on board, I think genuinely to show him the stars, because he deserves it, but also as a buffer.
And, of course by the next episode, which is only a little while later because it's Mickey's first trip, Rose has completely accepted Mickey, is having fun with him, and the Doctor is treating them both as tag-alongs.¨*sigh*
But my rants on Moffat are for next week, if I have time. Which I probably will find. This is more fun than studying English Literature, anyway.
