I.
Hello to the new friends I made on the friending meme!
I should make one of those pinned intro things at the top of my blog, but until then, if you want to get to know me you can take a look at some of my recent posts, I've introduced myself and talked a bit about my essential media and stuff there.

For everyone : I have been locking posts where I talk about personal information (mostly because I get paranoid about RL people finding me and seeing what I write about them). If I haven't given you access, it's probably because we haven't really interacted, so all you have to do is come way hi ;)

I took the trope test thing because people were doing it.

Before going into the actual top five, I can already tell you the conclusion: Essentially, a lot of my fic preferences come down to the fact that I like reading about characters who are already close (good friends, lovers, whatever) rather than following people from the first meeting up to getting together, but I also love drama and angst, so most established relationship stories are too boring.
My perfect fic - and in practice, most of the ones I keep going back to - probably shows the characters getting together in the first few chapters. If a story has the love confession, the first kiss, and diving into bed all in the final chapter, chances are I'm never going back to it.

I just went through my bookmarks, and yeah: every single story has the love interests kiss, have sex, or go on a date before the halfway mark, except for the ones where they are best friends who are practically living together within the first two chapters, or where the focus is one them becoming friends and the romantic relationship is incidental (all the Harry/Draco by Saras_Girl).

1. They Break Up (but then They Get Back Together)
Yeah, this is my all-time number one winner, this quiz knows what it's doing. Give me allll the getting back together stories!
I don't know where this comes from, exactly, but it probably has something to do with my first two, most formative ships being Doctor/Rose and Remus/Sirius. When I got into Doctor Who fandom and shipped Doctor/Rose, it was just before S4, so about 75 percent of fic was post-Doomsday reunion stuff. Which I loved.
Then I fell into Remus/Sirius, which is like the holy grail of ships breaking up and getting back together. Teenage romance ending in betrayal! A 13 year separation! Dramatic reunion! Misunderstandings cleared up! Forced cohabitation with your ex!
This is also why I never read post-POA fic where they hadn't been together before Azkaban. Just didn't interest me.

2. Hurt/Comfort
A classic. Logan/Veronica is a good example of a ship where I really fell for them when they started comforting each other. Especially with antagonistic characters it's so powerful when the hostility falls away when one of them is hurt. Also: angry, hostile people being soft (see: Ronan Lynch dreaming hand lotion).

3. Royals/Political Marriage Turns Into Feelings
I just picked an icon for this post and THE PAINTED VEIL! Yes! My favorite movie, for a long time at least, exactly because of this trope! (I don't know why it specifies Royal or political marriage - it's arranged marriage in general).

Also: Vegas wedding. One of my all-time favorite fics is Shut Up (Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is) (Dean/Cas): they don't know each other, get married while drunk, and then just kind of go with it. Which means they are living together, renovating a house together, having regular sex etc before they realize they're in love. It's the best.

4. Found Families
Yess. A lot of my favorite stories in general involve this trope. The Ruby in the Smoke (where my username on all non-DW platforms comes from), Six of Crows, The Raven Cycle etc.

5. Friends to Lovers
I had a funny discussion with a friend recently about this ; she ships Draco/Hermione, I sometimes read Harry/Draco, and she was really into the whole enemies-to-lovers thing, and all the angst that comes with it. And I had to admit that the only Harry/Draco fic I like are the ones where, post-Hogwarts, they become friends before they become lovers (essentially, I only read one fic writer, lol). I just like people to like each other!

There was no Critical Role this week, and I also had no plans on Friday and Saturday night, and I genuinely felt at a loss? What...did I used to do at the end of a work week?? It has become such a tradition for me when I don't have plans to stop working early on Fridays, don't cook for once, get some wine, watch Critical Role. Thank god it's back this week.
