LISTS. 2023 in best-ofs.

These lists are all the Best-of, not everything I’ve seen/read/done!! I added a bit more commentary this year as well.

Reading
It's not really reflected in numbers, but I had a very good reading year. I read a lot of different genres, some big, heavy (literally and figuratively) stuff and found more space in my daily life to devote to reading. Yay!

Highlights:
Het Lied van Ooievaar en Dromedaris - Anjet Daanje (Dutch!)
Station Eleven - Emily St John Mandel
Hell Bent - Leigh Bardugo
The Eighth Life - Nino Haratischwili

Movies
I went to the cinema a fair bit but I sucked at watching movies at home this year. I really wanna get back into that next year!

Highlights:
Aftersun
The Banshees of Inisherin
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One
Asteroid City

Television
Weirdly didn't watch that much tv. I have no idea what I was up to this year.

Highlights:
Boris (Belgian tv show)
Happy Valley S3
Andor
The Doctor Who specials!

Fandom
My fandom is still centered around BTS. This was year three of my fandom and it's mellowed a lot. I don't watch everything they put out anymore. The solo era was interesting and fun but I'm more emotionally invested in the seven of them together as a form of entertainment. There were some good songs though!
I read a lot of fic, almost exclusively BTS rpf, in a variety of pairings.
My version of Doctor Who came back and I'm SO stoked.

Highlights:
The final Agust D show (watched through livestream) was an emotional highlight of the year that I have not stopped thinking about and possibly never will. Something really magical happened that night between artist and fans. The absolute breakdown and the catharsis of the end where he finally walks throught the door was astonishing.
My favorite song BTS released this year was probably Like Crazy by Jimin
Not a highlight but it surprised me how affected I was by all the members enlisting.
I really loved seeing RTD, David Tennant, and Catherine Tate together again onscreen.

Music
I didn't listen to a ton of (non-kpop) new music this year. Oh well.

Highlights:
New Hozier album and listening to it for the first time on a beach in Italy/driving though the hills
Seeing all the new BTS songs and what each member turned out to do. Fave BTS songs were: Like Crazy, Standing Next to You, Snooze, Love me Again
but mostly I still listened to RM's Indigo a lot
other kpop: SHINee Identity, Taemin's everything as a divine being, BSS - Fighting was so fun!

playlist

Podcasts
Highlights/faves:
Heavyweight is the best podcast ever made and Spotify SUCKS
regular weekly listens: Empire Film podcast, Pilot tv podcast
New ones: Search Engine, De Erfenis (Belgian podcast), probably a bunch of true crime stuff I've forgotten? Bone Valley was this year I think.

Live shows (theatre/concerts/…)
Agust D final show through livestream
Hozier
B.I - though I'm not really a fan, this show was so much fun
Maneskin was also a blast
saw Hamilton for the second time, still great!

2022 is the year that I
Got a new job that I've been working towards for years. Feel very accomplished.
Saw some beautiful places in Italy; Sorrento, Positano...
Found a way to enjoy my time alone at home more by reading, being productive.
Started going to art history classes

last year I wanted to

Go on at least one date, even if it’s just to get it out of my system. I did go on one (1) date. Well, one speeddate and one proper date. It sucked (the proper date, the speeddate was fine) but I'm glad I did it!
Keep writing fic I haven't really published anything but I've been writing here and there
Read a lot, watch a lot, listen to new music, so that I find at least one song or scene or whatever that gives me goosebumps like Wild Flower and Calamity did this year. Hm. I think that D-Day liveshow moment was one of those. Also the movie Aftersun destroyed me and I'm still thinking about it all the time. And some of the books I read were amazing. Oh, and the Hozier song De Selby I.
Make a new friend, can be online or a work friend. not really. Things have evolved - I got back in touch with a friend I was losing, I got closer to one of my best friends and less close to another, and I have a few people who are like...on the cusp between acquaintance and friend.
Prove that life is better than death (©RM) the work of a lifetime. Not proven, but often felt.

Next year I want to
Go on at least one date, again.
Feel better about myself, mostly at work, but also just generally, mentally.
Watch more movies.
Keep reading a lot!
Do some work on my house (boring but necessary)
Exercise more
