Interview with the Vampire
I finished Interview with the Vampire and immediately thought, 'I need to talk about this! Let's open up Dreamwidth!' but now that I'm here I realize it's too soon to have like, well-thought out meta. I'm very much still in the 'screaming about it' phase. This is just word vomit but I have to let it out!
What I've been struck by most is that it feels like an old-school show in some ways, though I think that also does it a disservice because there really isn't another show like it. So ambitious, so well-crafted, but also fun, and camp! More shows like this PLEASE.
If you follow tv news a bit, you'll know that a lot of beloved fandom-adjacent shows get cancelled after one or two seasons these days, presumably because 'not enough' people watch them and they're not given the time to find an audience. There are also a lot of reports that executives make writers dumb down their shows because people have to be ale to watch them while scrolling on Instagram or whatever.
Knowing that, it's unbelievable that this show, with a fairly small but passionate audience, is allowed to exist and take wild swings. I hope that that is a sign that when something is this level of quality, at least some powers that be still think it's important to support it. And it's so good! The level of camp, the gayness, the gore. But also the complexity!
I love that they trust the audience to go along on the ride. They basically use a few short moments in season 1 to establish that what we see in flashback is unreliable (was it raining, Louis?) and it's enough to engage the audience, to let us play along in the game, especially in S2. The one thing I love about this show above all else is that aspect of it, the thread of storytelling and the impossibility of being objective about your own memories.
It also really shows onscreen that the people who make this show really, really care. I read some articles about the costuming, which is incredibly precise and intentional and accurate. The music is fabulous. Every single actor is perfectly cast and seems to have been born to play this particular role. The set design is amazing. etc etc.
( Misc. thoughts under the cut )
I feel a little bereft, and not sure what to do with these feelings. I don't know anyone irl who watches this show because you still can't stream it here. I ship Louis/Lestat, obviously, though it feels silly to even call it shipping. I fully support this relationship as written in the show, which is also why I will probably never read fic - literally every scene I would want in fic is in the show! Guess I'll just keep reblogging gifs on Tumblr.

2022 year in fandom
Saw this one going around, thought it might be fun.
1. Your main fandom of the year?
BTS. Last year and the year before, I was very much in that first obessive fase of fandom where I was constantly thinking about it, but this year it was much more manageable. BTS themselves slowed down this year as well, so it was easy to just kind of dip in and out. I mostly hang around on reddit, where most people are sane, and read fic. I go on twitter and tumblr for updates and translations but I stay away from the fandom there mostly.
2. Your favorite film you watched this year?
Probably Everything Everywhere All at Once . I also really liked Glass Onion, Decision to Leave, Sound of Metal, Elvis, and Licorice Pizza
3. Your favorite book read this year?
There are two books I gave 5 stars on Goodreads this year: Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin and How to be Perfect by Mike Schur (nonfiction). But the one I enjoyed the most was probably The Watchmaker of Filigree Street.
4. Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
Stars put out a new album, their first in years - Capelton Hill. I loved it.
RM's album Indigo came out in december so I have to sit with it for a while to know how it will hold up, but I really like it and I think I can already say that Wild Flower will be one of my all-time favorite songs (which I can't even say for any BTS songs). He's just really great.
5. Your favorite TV show of the year?
I very, very slowly watched the last few seasons of Better Call Saul this year and finally finished the show in the first few days of 2023, so I'm counting it as a 2022 show. Absolute masterpiece. The finale is in my top three finales ever.
Severance was also very good!
6. Your favorite podcast of the year?
I don't think I listened to any new ones that particularly stood out. My favorite podcast has been the same for years; The Empire film podcast. It's the only one that I always listen to as soon as an episode comes out.
7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Not much, the only thing I can think of is that I branched out my fic reading for the first time; I'm usually pretty loyal to one ship in a fandom but since rpf is different and it's more about the quality of the stories than about any shippy feelings, I started reading any and all good BTS fic I could find regardless of ship, and it's pretty fun!
8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
A lot has happened since, but the way the BTS album was announced *as an album* and then weeks later it turned out to be an anthology was pretty shitty. For one of the biggest entertainment companies, Hybe really sucks at communication (see also the hiatus/disbandment/new chapter confusion).
9. Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
I have very intense and embarrassing feelings about Kim Namjoon.
9. Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
Not really fandom, but I would also go to prison for 86 years for Kim Wexler.
11. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Finishing my first fic and getting a bunch of comments and kudos.
And BTS-wise, when they finally performed Run BTS live.
12. The most missed of your old fandoms?
Critical Role. I dipped back in here and there but the main show is just too much of a commitment to keep up with now. I still love those guys and I miss the storytelling. Calamity was the best storytelling of the year, which I can never mention in these lists because it's not a movie/book/tv show.
I miss it and I don't though, because the way the fandom was when I first started watching (5? ish years ago?) is completely gone.
13.Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
Taehyung solo album!
Also Taemin comeback, hopefully posting more fic, new RTD Doctor Who episodes, ...

It's been a real struggle to focus on anything not BTS-related since getting into them in October, but yesterday I watched Bo Burnham's new special and today I finished 'The Invisible Life of Addie Larue', and both of those made me feel really emotional and connected to humanity and weirdly happy to be alive and I really missed feeling - kpop gives me a lot of joy but I missed the beauty of good art and good stories.
And I also got to enjoy the absolute madness BTS unleashed on twitter for about half an hour there, so I'm really getting the best of both worlds here
Also it's the finale of Critical Role campaign two today. I've not been able to keep up with CR since October and am massively behind (like 6 months at this point). It kind of sucks, at the end of the first campaign I was just too late catching up to watch it when it came out, and for the longest time I was looking forward to being there for it this time. But then kpop happened. I'm still watching, just slowly, and I know I'll get there, but there's something sad about not feeling the same spark anymore for a show & fandom I loved to much for years.

I.
I always start thinking about Dreamwidth in the fall/winter. Maybe it's the seasonal depression? Maybe I associate this place with coziness and warmth? I also feel nostalgic for the old LJ days whenever I find a new fandom. I feel adrift now, trying to find a community, when it used to be easy to just join something. I remember when I started watching BBC Merlin, how fun it was to join the LJ community and meet people there. Good times. Now my fannishness is so much more solitary, which makes it feel more unhealthy? I hang out on reddit sometimes, but it's not quite the kind of fandom I used to like being a part of.
Tumblr is so weird for new fandoms. I started reblogging kpop stuff because it was all I could think about, but I felt kind of bad about it. Because who was even seeing it? I only have a few followers, but none of them are in this fandom. When I reblog movies or tv shows, at least it might interest anyone. But I know how many people I unfollowed over the years for turning into kpop blogs. There is no easy way to join a community on Tumblr unless you create, and I have no desire to do that. It's the same as when I used to reblog Supernatural gifsets; I always apologized in the tags because I felt like such a cliché. I usually make comments in the tags, and I never assume anyone reads them, but it's okay if they do. But what's the point of commenting in the tags of kpop posts when none of the people seeing them know what I'm talking about?
I love talking to people about things that I'm obsessed with, and I miss it. When I think back to my early years in fandom, I talked to people so much. I had ongoing chats with online friends about Doctor Who, there were reaction posts about episodes, etc. I also had RL fannish friends to talk to. Luckily, two of my best friends know about my fandom life and one of them is fannish as well, so I can talk to them about that part of me, but obviously I haven't seen much of them this year. And also, there is only so much you can yell at people about a Korean boyband before they start backing away from you, loll. The last time I saw them, I showed them 6 whole youtube videos before getting a hold of myself.
I wonder why I feel the need to apologize so much to no one. Probably nobody will read this post, yet I still feel like saying 'sorry for rambling' or 'sorry for coming to yet another place to yell about BTS'. Who cares!
Anyway. I might use this blog to ramble sometimes, I might not. Generally, I'm doing fine, I guess. This year is fucking weird, I feel like we need to keep taking a step back to realize that sometimes. My best friend is getting married next week and at best, I get to congratulate her from a distance with a mask on at city hall and then go home. Right now I'm waiting to find out if we're going into full lockdown again and if I can leave my house to come to work tomorrow or not. Last weekend, I couldn't see the only person I've been able to hug this last year because she had a light cold. Whenever I think about the state of the country and the world, I start to panic, so all I do is think about BTS. I'm finding it incredibly hard to figure out if I'm coping alright now partly because of the new obsession, of if the new obsession itself is a sign I'm not coping very well at all.

God I miss memes
I found this meme through someone here like a month ago, copied the list, and now I don't know where it's from so I can credit! SO if you know whose this is, lmk
I haven't been on here, but sometimes when I'm bored at work I like filling out memes. So I'm gonna use this year-long meme on a monthly basis - I answer questions in a doc when I feel like it, and then once a month I post them. If anyone reads these, that's fine. If no one does, it's mostly for me anyway.
Jan 1 What is one thing you’d like to accomplish in 2020?
I want to find a partner and have a relationship, honestly. That’s intimidatingly huge and feels almost wrong to put out into the universe, but yeah. I've always been fine alone, but last year that started to change.
2 What would be the first sentence of your autobiography?
The first thing I remember from childhood is being five years old and sitting on the couch in our old living room, while my mother tells me my father has just died in hospital, and simultaneously hearing my grandmother wail in the kitchen as my grandfather tells her the same news.
The older I get, the more I think this explains a lot about me.
3 For every day of 2020, you will be required to wear a t-shirt with the same one word on it. What word will you choose?
This is a dumb question and I’m not answering it.
4 What one thing are you looking forward to in 2020?
My trip to Scotland!
5 What’s your favorite way to spend a Sunday morning?
Under a blanket with a book or an episode of CR and a cup of tea
( Jan 6-31 under the cut )

Just a PSA for literally everyone who hasn't watched Fleabag yet: GO WATCH FLEABAG, NOW. It's not that long. You have time. There is no excuse. If you think you won't like it, you are wrong because it's perfect. Thank you.
(just finished S2. don't know what to do with myself. it's the best thing I've seen in years, I think. It's flawless. The complicated women, the friendships, the hot priest who is only so hot because he's written by women for women, the fourth wall breaking that has made it impossible for other shows to break the fourth wall ever again. Also how hilarious it is, and how desperately sad at the same time. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a genius).

That's what an angel is. Dust pressed into a diamond by the weight of this world
I finished The OA yesterday and I need to yell about it! If you have also seen it, please come yell with me!
Spoilers under the cut, but first non-spoilery for people who haven't seen it:
If you've been wondering if you should watch this show (it's on Netflix!), I recommend giving it a try! It's deeply weird and complex and intriguing in a way not many shows are. I think it's so hard to make a tv show that is still original and manages to engage and surprise the audience without also frustrating them and this really manages it imo.
It has a very engaging mystery at the center of both the first and second season to keep you engaged, but also manages to weave this weird, mind-bending world around it that is surreal without becoming otherworldly. It has (in S2) a few deep WTF moments and I do think there are probably people who liked S1 but lost the thread in S2 because it becomes so deeply strange and metaphysical, but I loved it.
So if you're interested; it has an engaging plot and very interesting characters and relationships, as well as themes of faith, connection, friendship, the multiverse etc.
Also, if you want to know more, ask and I will rave to you (non-spoilery ofc)!
I won't talk about plot beyond the basic premise because I went in not knowing much and it works best, I think, if you are surprised by it.
Now onto spoilers!

Critrole squee and book talk
I.
Guyyssss Critical Role is SMASHING Kickstarter records! OVER 6.5 MILLION DOLLARS!!! ANIMATED BRIARWOOD ARC!!!!!!!! I'M SO EXCITED!!!
In other Critical Role news, I recently bought some big fanart prints to hang on my wall - the fanart in this fandom, for those of you who don't know, is insane, it's as gorgeous as any professional art I've seen. I tweeted a picture out earlier and tagged the artists because I know they like seeing their art on people's walls, and Matt Mercer liked my tweet so I quietly freaked out for a minute!
I have to stop myself from just talking about how grateful I am to have found this show and this fandom in every post I make.

More book meme questions!
2. Best bargain.
I take a lot of books home for free when the library gets rid of them! There are gems in there sometimes.
3. One with a blue cover.
I have to base this on what's currently on my shelf, so let's go with Broken Harbour by Tana French - not my favourite of hers, but I love everything she writes so it's still great. It's probably the most sinister and creepy of her Dublin Murder Squad series and one that really got under my skin - part of the plot is about a man who becomes convinced something is living in his walls and his attic. The trope of a stranger secretly living in your walls is probably my worst nightmare? Just thinking about it now is freaking me out.
4. Least favorite book by favorite author.
Hm. One of my favourite authors is Hilary Mantel, and my least favourite of hers is Beyond Black - it just didn't grip me the way most of her other novels have.
5. Doesn't belong to me.
I used to buy a lot of books, but since I work in a library and have a Kindle, I only buy the ones I really care about or new releases by authors I already love. On my Kindle, I mostly buy thrillers and fantasy to read on holiday or on the train. And everything else I get from the library if we have it - I almost always read in English so sometimes we only have the translation into Dutch but not the English version, in which case I usually have to buy it.

I finished Russian Doll yesterday. That was so good! The best show I've seen in a long time, honestly. Natasha Lyonne is amazing. I appreciated that it only had 8 short episodes and managed to tell such a compelling story in such a short time.

So Critical Role just raised over 4 million dollars in a day to make an animated series :O It's insane and I'm so happy for them - I pledged some too, just because I love this fandom and I want the CR team to be able to do anything they dream of. I'm really planning to just keep hanging around in this fandom forever, because I've never been happier to be part of a community ♥
III.
I'm gonna try to do a book meme that I saw on
dolorosa_12's journal.
Day One: Favorite book from Childhood
( The Ruby in the Smoke )

I'm having trouble keeping up with Critical Role lately because I'm so busy (also why I don't post here much!) but I managed to see The Search for Grog. It made me miss VM so much! I do like the Nein a lot but man, they still have a way to go if they wanna be up there with VM.
II.
Oscars happened. Last year I was pretty interested in all the nominated movies and thought almost all of them were pretty good, but this year I really wasn't excited about any of them. I guess now I'm gonna have to see Green Book at some point.
I did see If Beale Street Could Talk this week, which was just gorgeous and not even nominated, which is just mindboggling.
I also saw The Favourite and was much less wild about it than, apparently, my entire Tumblr dash. Olivia Colman was great though.

Tropes tropes tropes

Hello to the new friends I made on the friending meme!
I should make one of those pinned intro things at the top of my blog, but until then, if you want to get to know me you can take a look at some of my recent posts, I've introduced myself and talked a bit about my essential media and stuff there.
For everyone : I have been locking posts where I talk about personal information (mostly because I get paranoid about RL people finding me and seeing what I write about them). If I haven't given you access, it's probably because we haven't really interacted, so all you have to do is come way hi ;)
II.
I took the trope test thing because people were doing it.
Before going into the actual top five, I can already tell you the conclusion: Essentially, a lot of my fic preferences come down to the fact that I like reading about characters who are already close (good friends, lovers, whatever) rather than following people from the first meeting up to getting together, but I also love drama and angst, so most established relationship stories are too boring.
My perfect fic - and in practice, most of the ones I keep going back to - probably shows the characters getting together in the first few chapters. If a story has the love confession, the first kiss, and diving into bed all in the final chapter, chances are I'm never going back to it.
I just went through my bookmarks, and yeah: every single story has the love interests kiss, have sex, or go on a date before the halfway mark, except for the ones where they are best friends who are practically living together within the first two chapters, or where the focus is one them becoming friends and the romantic relationship is incidental (all the Harry/Draco by Saras_Girl).
( Top 5 tropes under the cut )

There was no Critical Role this week, and I also had no plans on Friday and Saturday night, and I genuinely felt at a loss? What...did I used to do at the end of a work week?? It has become such a tradition for me when I don't have plans to stop working early on Fridays, don't cook for once, get some wine, watch Critical Role. Thank god it's back this week.

2018 : a list
These are little best-of lists I make every year around this time to kind of reflect on the past year. Usually it's the one day in the year I come back to LJ/Dreamwidth, but this year things have changed and I'm hanging around here more so yay!
2018 was a very uneventful year for me. It's the first year probably...ever... that I haven't had any major milestones or hurdles to get through. No more exams to pass or degrees to get, no jobhunting etc. Two years ago, I finally got a permanent contract at my job and bought a house, and last year I spent the first six month moving into the house. So this year I've been really settled? I have a job, a household. There also haven't been any major shifts in the people in my life - same friends, same family members I still talk to.
I might make a longer personal thinky post at some point because this one is pretty long already. Idk if this is of any interest to anyone but me, but I like making it and you're welcome to read and comment!
Anyway, on to the lists!

Essential media
I stole this from
ladytharen
What would someone need to watch, read, or listen to in order to really know and understand you? Basically, what media defines you and made you who you are today?
This is both stuff that influenced me when I was young and stuff that I really connect to today. It's a very random of-the-moment selection!
