2018 : a list
2018-12-27 09:32![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
These are little best-of lists I make every year around this time to kind of reflect on the past year. Usually it's the one day in the year I come back to LJ/Dreamwidth, but this year things have changed and I'm hanging around here more so yay!
2018 was a very uneventful year for me. It's the first year probably...ever... that I haven't had any major milestones or hurdles to get through. No more exams to pass or degrees to get, no jobhunting etc. Two years ago, I finally got a permanent contract at my job and bought a house, and last year I spent the first six month moving into the house. So this year I've been really settled? I have a job, a household. There also haven't been any major shifts in the people in my life - same friends, same family members I still talk to.
I might make a longer personal thinky post at some point because this one is pretty long already. Idk if this is of any interest to anyone but me, but I like making it and you're welcome to read and comment!
Anyway, on to the lists!
Reading
All 14 of Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache books
The Wych Elm - Tana French
When We Were Orphans - Kazuo Ishiguro
Movies
(I'm gonna forget a bunch because I don't have my list with me!)
Widows
Paddington 2 (honestly the best movie I saw this year)
The Death of Stalin
Call Me by Your Name
Harold and Maude
Blade Runner 2049
The Greatest Showman
Television
The Good Place
S1 of The Americans
I watched almost only Critical Role (and everything Critrole-related) tbh
Fandom
I did a weird fanfiction deep dive that started with rereading some of my favorite fics, which made me decide to (re)read everything by by rageprufrock
which led me to finally reading the masterpiece that is The Least of All Possible Mistakes (tangent: this is a BBC Sherlock Mycroft/female!Lestrade fic and possibly the greatest fic of all time?? Even if you don't like the show - I don't!- or haven't seen it , it doesn't matter! READ IT).
I then read more of her stuff, including Presque Vu, an Inception Arthur/Eames story that is possibly the second greatest fic of all time after the previous one??
That then led me to fall into Inception fic like 6? years too late, where I spent a solid month reading a lot of good stuff.
I also still read some Dean/Castiel and Harry/Draco, mostly rereading old faves
There was also a month or two where I watched a lot of Shane Dawson videos on youtube? I don't know why.
My main fandom is (obviously if you've followed me for a while) CR, but I don't really read fic for that. Mostly I hang out in the fandom on Tumblr, Twitter and Reddit and watch All The Content.
Music
Lol, I suck at music these days. Apparently, my most played album on Spotify was the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend cast album.
Literally all I listened to were musicals, Critical Role playlists, and those 'best of the [insert era here]' playlists while cleaning.
Podcasts
Ear Hustle
Caliphate
By the Book
You Must Remember This (Hollywood Babylon series)
And the old faves: The Empire Podcast, Reply All, Answer Me This,...
2018 is the year that I
Went to Porto and Rhodes (both great)
Went to London with my mum to see Hamilton!
Settled in my home and got used to a new routine of taking care of myself
Watched a LOT of Critical Role
Generally had a very uneventful but relaxing year
last year I wanted to
Get better at managing my household - kind of? I'm still a lazy slob and there's room for improvement but I keep it semi-clean and cook a lot
Do something to leave my house more often (evening course etc) I actually tried to register for a course but it was full! But also, because I was in a better place mentally I don't feel like I really needed this as much
Maybe try dating again? I did try! I went on two whole dates, lol
Go on at least one holiday! Three holidays
Hold onto the five amazing friends I have Yessss
Next year I want to
Learn to do at least one of the following things: knit, sew, or make bread
Generally do some things I've never done before
Have a sense of what I still want to achieve - not necessarily achieve it, just think about it more
Read more books and watch more movies and tv that isn't CR

Date: 2018-12-28 13:49 (UTC)I love the CR playlists so much. I'm still working my way through the Vox Machina ones, but I love the early ones, and the new Mighty Nein ones are great and also A Lot.
I also saw Hamilton in London this year! That was a great experience!
I can recommend learning to knit - I have started that recently and find it's an excellent activity to do whilst watching CR.

Date: 2018-12-28 15:42 (UTC)I would love to be able to knit during CR! I've tried to learn a few times but always get frustrated that I don't get it fast enough so I just have to push through. You don't happen to have any good resources for beginners?

Date: 2018-12-28 15:50 (UTC)I have joined Ravelry, which I'm enjoying because I can filter potential projects by how easy they are, and I've found that starting out with a couple of small projects that I could finish quickly helped with having a sense that I was accomplishing something.

Date: 2019-01-01 09:32 (UTC)This made me blink a couple of times:
this is a BBC Sherlock Mycroft/female!Lestrade fic
Because - what? lmfao
I love how fic can be the greatest thing ever, even when it's pretty random, and it's all free - just created by fans, for fans, and that's so great. (I too read some really fucking amazing fic this year and I am Grateful.)
(I also watched a lot of Shane Dawson this year haha)

Date: 2019-01-03 08:22 (UTC)Haha, I didn't read that fic for the longest time because the premise sounded so weird (and I don't even like Sherlock!) but man, it's so good.
I also love that whenever I end up in a weirdly specific deep dive (like the Shane Dawson one) there is always someone in fandom like hey, me too! ♥
