Children of Earth Day 5

I just saw it. My head's still a bit of a mess, so I'm not sure how much sense my thoughts are going to make.

First point is that I definitely liked it.

The whole series was soo much better than anything I've seen in this show, and I am positive that's because of RTD. He wrote an exciting plot, with interesting, human characters, and with good social commentary. The politicians were evil, but it did drive the point home, and I actually liked all of our "heroes".

Apparently there's a lot of hate because of what Jack did, but I don't really see what the problem is. I mean, of course it was a horrible thing to do, sacrificing his grandson, but if it was the only choice, I don't know what else he could have done. He didn't have any time to come up with a complicated plan, or to build something, it really was the only choice, I think.

The only problem I have is that is was really too dark. i mean, it was very hard to get through it. People dying and killing themselves, the government being evil and terrifying, Jack angsting,... There was hardly a light moment in all the five days, and it got really hard to keep watching near the end. I'm very happy DW is still, in essence, a kid's show, so the final episodes won't be this dark. I'm sure he's going to push it, though...

I really loved Gwen, and Gwen/Rhys. I've always liked Gwen, but I thought her cheating on Rhys was horrible and a very bad decision. So I'm happy they let go of that idea.

Jack leaving at the end, well, it was very parallel to the Doctor, of course. He's lost everything and everyone he cares about, he thinks he only hurts people close to him, so he runs away to other planets. It makes sense, the only reason he stayed on earth was to find the Doctor, and after that because of his team.

I had the feeling this means the end of the show, I'm not sure how they could make a new season, and I'm not sure if I'll be interested in a whole new cast. In certainly ended on a high.

Other short thoughts:

- The Children are drugs: Brilliant idea, really. Very RTD. They don't need them, they're just drugs.

- Frobisher: Absolutely one of the, maybe even the most powerful moment of the season. Especially when you know it's tv and it will be solved, so he kills them too soon. But very good, the small pauze before the fourth shot...

- Ianto: Part of me was really hoping he'd magically come back somehow. But after 6 months, it's clear he's still dead. And if this is the end, it's for the best.
