I. I've rewatched Being Human S1 and it's still stunning. I'm enjoying the current season too, though I miss the sense of family the original OT3 had. I know it's the point that the new one isn't as close but I don't like it. And I didn't really enjoy the last episode much at all (maybe because of that?). But the episode before that was very funny and made me warm up to Hal a lot.
I'm also still watching The Vampire Diaries, Parks and Recreation, Shameless US and Smash. I never talk about those because I hardly have any feelings on them, but I feel like I should mention I'm still watching them? :P

II. In real life, not much is going on that's even remotely interesting. I'm trying to get it together and plan for the future and work hard etc but you know. I'm me and it could be going better. I'm making an effort though, and I only have 9 hours of class each week AND decided not to take a weekend course thingy I wanted so I could focus on the work I have to do. Hopefully it'll work out.

III. Some excellent questions that [livejournal.com profile] space_dementia6 asked me for that one meme that's been going around:

I. I finished A Dance with Dragons (like two weeks ago but I forgot to post about it, OOPS). General thoughts and some hopes for what comes next:
Expandit rhymes with bloody traumatising )

II. I also finished Six Feet Under.
(Also; the song playing over the end of ep 5 of Luther is Breathe Me, the same song playing over the end of Six Feet Under, which I watched the day before. And if you have seen both these shows you can appreciate how traumatising my relationship with this song is now).

muneca_brava: (Default)
I. I'm rewatching Luther for the third time right now, and you probably don't know this about me but this is a big deal. I don't generally rewatch episodes at all. Sometimes when something is really good I'll watch it again the next day and sometimes I rewatch my favourite episodes but not a lot. I don't think there's any episode of anything I've seen more than 4 or 5 times, and those are very rare. It's the same with movies, really, but there are more exceptions there (I think I've seen Moulin Rouge 20 times or so).
I do rewatch scenes a lot though. The record is probably joint between the reunion in The Stolen Earth (one of these days that Dalek won't appear!) and that one scene in the Life on Mars finale. You know the one.

All this to say, the things I do for Ruth Wilson's face and Idris Elba's voice are getting ridiculous.
I've talked about this show on Tumblr before, but not on Lj - despite the fact that I changed my default icon to the cutest psycho on tv ages ago. Basically, I have a complicated relationship with ir, because I don't even like the plots in this show! And Alice is in like one scene in most episodes. But I'm still rewatching the whole thing! So I guess this is also me telling you to go and watch this show. It's cop drama but if you watch selectively, like I do, it's about good vs evil and grey morality and sociopaths in love. :D Only 10 episodes so it's worth it.

II. In sort-of related news, I bought the Being Human boxset with all three seasons for 21 € on Play.com - they even deliver for free in Belgium! So I'll be rewatching that, probably.

III. The Vampire Diaries this week was all about how pretty the cast is and how everyone has chemistry with everyone, right? All it missed was Katherine, but I say that every week.

IV. Leave me a character and I'll tell you my top 3 ships for them.

BEING HUMAN IS BAAAAAACK :DD
oooooh!

Reaction post under the cut! WARNING: lots of words, lots of babbling, lack of substance and coherency.

ExpandI've missed this show more than you can imagine )

Non-spoilery, I can say that I really liked the episode. This show is a serious contender for Favourite Ever, and in terms of current tv shows it's actually on top (finally jumping over Doctor Who, though that's less to do with this episode than with the last season of DW). I think it is quite wonderful in that it manages to mix drama - dark, messed-up character drama - with moments of pure comedy and popculture. So I'm still telling all of you to start watching it or get back to watching it. If you are in doubt, come talk to me and I shall convince you :D

III. I had my last exam today and it went really well! It was the same professor as my other exam and at the end of both he said it had been good, which is really nice of him because it means a lot less anxiety. Now I only have to worry about the papers I handed in, and I was pretty pleased with them myself.
Classes start again in two weeks, so I plan to use the time to work on my thesis (and celebrate my birthday :D).
muneca_brava: (Default)
I. First up, a few fic recs. I've been tentatively setting foot into Sherlock fandom, looking for fic, but I don't think it'll work out. And I figured out why that is: I don't actually ship Sherlock/John that much. I like how they are in the show, I don't think either of them can have a healthy relationship with someone else at this point, I even like the idea of John being a bit confused about his feelings for Sherlock. But from the moment they start making out or declaring their love for each other I hit backspace. Idk.

But I did read two fics this last week that I loved, both from authors I already knew (so I didn't have to search through comms and archives). Neither of them is Sherlock/John (not more than the show is, anyway) - just as a warning ;)

- The Anatomist by [livejournal.com profile] rosa_acicularis. Molly Hooper and Jim Moriarty are psychopathic twins. Basically. Written post-S1, Sherlock is only a side character and John hardly appears. This fic blew me away, so give it a chance even if it sounds weird to you! It's a collection of short snippets from the two of them growing up together and becoming who they are. Warning for disturbing imagery and language.

- Scotch by [livejournal.com profile] earlgreytea68. The link goes to the third story, the others are linked in the description. Post-Reichenbach, canon compliant.
This is, so far, the story I wanted to read after the episode. It's more or less about Mycroft stalking Lestrade tbh :P It's just...the two of them talking, mostly, but it's great and the characters are incredibly in character. The second one has John in it too, and is pretty heartbreaking because of that. :/

II. I wrote another ficlet, this time for the Villainesses Comment Ficathon (go look, it's awesome!)

Title With my keeper (I clean up)
Fandom Rebecca (yes, the 1940s Hitchcock movie)
Characters Mrs. Danvers (/Rebecca)

I.So you know how last time I posted about Sherlock I warned people who loved it to stay away? I think now I'll warn people who hated it to stay away (WHO HATED IT, COME ON :o).

ExpandSPOILERS for Reichenbach!!! (+ fanvid) )

So if anyone already knows of good reunion fic I would...not be averse to that.

II. Speaking of writing: 10 page paper that has to be finished by tomorrow is currently 4 pages long and NOT growing longer. I'm tempted to just add long quotes from academic sources, that's always good right? :)

I'm really in a writing mood, though. Just not paper-related :( I kind of feel inspired for the first time in forever to work on my novel of doom / eternal WIP (which is a collection of interludes atm because I CANNOT DO PLOT. Like, the plot exists in my head but whenever I try to write it I end up writing introspection or 'babbling over tea'-scenes).

So yesterday Sherlock started again! I shall start with the non-spoilery stuff I liked so that if you are a huge fan you can read this and smile and move on without clicking the cut to read the spoilery stuff I hated. :)

Non-spoilery things I liked:
The way this show is filmed is stunning, and so is the music. Top quality and very enjoyable to watch!
It had some really funny moments. It also had some great exploration of Sherlock's humanity and the limits of it, and very interesting tidbits about the Holmes siblings. I really like their dynamic and their similarities.
The acting was flawless as always.

II. Only one more week of class and then IT'S CHRISTMAS :DD Looking forward to it! I usually celebrate christmas eve with my mum and then christmas day with the family, but because they're still not talking to each other we're probably spending the day at my mum's boyfriend's house (which means I have to get him a present and I have NO IDEAS).

And then for New Year, I'm home alone for a week, which will be a bit weird because it's a week where I won't really go out much because of studying so I will hardly see any people. I don't have any plans for New Year's Eve yet but I never really do much. On the other hand I don't really fancy spending it alone with my cat so I'll maybe invite some friends over or something...

III. Parks and Recreation and Leverage are still the two best things on television and make me so damn happy on a weekly basis. I hope you are all watching these shows because I will keep telling you to until it happens. :)
muneca_brava: (Default)
I. I started taking driving lessons. I only have 6 hours with an instructor and the rest with my mum, and I am not really enjoying it, to say the least. I know everyone struggles with this but I just get so frustrated when I can't do something despite practising like crazy. I went to drive today and almost ran over two pedestrians. :S

II. This weekend I'm going on another film weekend, same concept as that week I did this summer. The theme is romantic comedy so it should be fun. I'm a bit worried though, because the end of the semester is fast approaching and I haven't really done/finished anything yet. I've only been watching films for my thesis, which means I haven't written anything yet, I only have a vague idea for my film&narrative paper (I'm thinking of writing something on Tarantino). There is another class where we are allowed but not obliged to make our own short film and I didn't think I'd do it, but like yesterday I agreed to maybe do it after all with a few other people. But it's very last-minute and I am starting to freak out.

And add to that the fact that I still don't have a clue what I want to do next year. I really want to go abroad for a semester or a year but I don't know doing what. If I stay here I want to get a job or study something else but only if it really interests me. I'm not doing something economic or whatever just because it would make it easier to get a job because I would just hate every second of it.

III Because I tend to only post about tv shows, some other things I have been enjoying lately:

  • Books: Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. Pretty well-known, but if you haven't read it yet and are into historical fiction: buy it. Now. It's tudor-era, about Thomas Cromwell and spans the period of Henry's struggle to marry Anne Boleyn. It's marvellously written; she can make you laugh or cry in a single paragraph. The ladies are also excellent; I admit I am a bit biased about this period because I love it so, and Anne Boleyn is one of my very favourite historical figures, but how Mantel writes her is amazing. But the best character is probably Mary Boleyn who only shows up now and then but is wonderful.

  • Movies: I watched Clue the other day and it is hilarious! People kept telling me it was terrible but I still wanted to watch it because of the concept and also Tim Curry. And I love it, idec how ridiculous it is!
I went to see Tintin because those comic books are my whole childhood (I think I read them like over a 100 times). I gotta say I was severely underwhelmed though. Action-adventure movies aren't really my thing anyway and this was just all chases and epicness and the characters were just there to move the plot forward. Which isn't that different from the comics but there it works better?

  • Is there anything I should be watching in the cinema these days? I hardly ever go anymore. Hell, I hardly watch movies made after 1960 (other than...Asian longtake cinema? :p)
And if you have any music or book recs, feel free to share!

2. Go to IMDb (or Wikiquote) and find a quote from each movie.

I. I'm really enjoying my classes this year. I only have four, three hours each, and three of those are film classes. So my homework mainly consists of "watch as many movies as you can". I don't have as many problems with those kinds of assignments :)

I actually have a QUESTION FOR LOVERS OF CLASSIC HOLLYWOODCINEMA!! ! I know there are some of those on my flist!
My thesis is going to be on the theme of the hysterical/paranoid woman in 1940's Hollywood. I am looking for any titles you can think of of movies made in the forties (or even thirties or fifties would be okay) with a woman character who goes (somewhat) insane. Gothic melodrama, genre Rebecca, Secret Beyond the Door, Suspicion, Gaslight etc. is the most common. So any wife who thinks her husband is trying to kill her, who is haunted by her predecessor, who hallucinates, etc.
Thanks!

II.So last week, I was bored and wanted to watch something. I could have chosen the next episode of Six Feet Under (I'm in S4), pick up The West Wing again etc. Instead, I decided I wanted something cheesy and entertaining and decided to give The Vampire Diaries a try.
We're about a week and a half later and I'm almost done with season 2.
I don't LOVE the show like I love some others - in fact there are times I hate it - but I just can't. stop. watching.

This has probably been all over your flist but just in case you haven't seen it yet:

Pretty much sums up why I try not to think about the plot of Moffat's oh-so-smart season arcs. And why I haven't been making reaction posts about most of this season; it would mean I think about the episodes after they have aired and that only gives me a headache.
muneca_brava: (Default)
So I think it's pretty clear I'm not on Lj much anymore. Not sure why, because I do still spend a lot of time online (Tumblr mainly). I imagine it might change at any moment and I will start posting and commenting a lot again so we'll see. Anyway, I'm making an update now!
I. Real life-wise, I went on holiday to Mallorca, which was FUN. Basically did nothing but lie in the sun and eat and drink. The week after that I went to Paris, which was also fun, if a lot more tiring.
Biggest news is that I passed all my exams (very unexpectedly), which means I got my bachelor's degree! :D This year I'm doing my master in theatre and film (but mostly film).
II. Tv-wise, I came back from Paris to the start of the new tv season. I kind of forgot how many shows I follow until they all came back in one week :S. For the interested; I'm watching How I Met Your Mother, Community, Parks and Recreation, Glee, Chuck (when it starts) and Downton Abbey. There are some new shows I may start (Revenge, Pan Am,...) but I'll wait a few weeks to see what the consensus generally is.
The one of these that I am having the most feelings over is by far Downton Abbey, because the construction is flawless and so are the characters. Mary is forever my favourite and I have so many emotions. I am also attached to Thomas even though I have tried not to be. But I don't even care anymore. I just hope his storylines this season will validate my headcanon :P
Of course I am also still watchingDoctor Who. I really liked The God Complex a lot but unfortunately it mostly made me want a new season of Being Human and made me realise how much I haven't been enjoying the rest of this half season. I hate what they did to River and Amy and just want to hit Moffat in the face even more than before. :/

Okay, I was going to say more but it's later than I thought and now I have to leave because I have a horrormovie-night to go to :) And if I postpone finishing this post it'll never get posted like the last five so here it is!

If you want to talk about any of the shows I mentioned, go in the comments and squee/complain/question because I would love to hear from you all. Or if you want to talk about anything else, of course!
muneca_brava: (Default)
Hi! Anyone still there? :P My internet has been fixed, finally. I left it broken because I hoped not having internet access might mean I'd be able to study better. That did not work.
I don't know if I'll be posting again this week - it's kind of a busy one - (but I'll be commenting!) so I'll already tell you I won't be here next week either because I am going to Mallorca. I have never actually done the kind of vacation before where you don't do anything but lie by a pool/the sea. I expect I'll get a lot of reading done, which is what I'm most looking forward tbh :P

Tv-wise, I don't actually have anything to say on Doctor Who. This week's episode was entirely forgettable and the one before that was everything that has been wrong with this season packed into 45 minutes.

I watched The Hour and I recommend it to everyone! It's very enjoyable and pretty. I didn't like the ~spy plot too much but the characters and actors were all perfect. I've also made myself a new default icon, which feels weird because I had Nina for such a long time, but I expect I'll get used to Bel :)

Some other reactions;
- I am halfway through A Feast for Crows but I didn't post my reaction to A Storm of Swords yet, and I had many reactions. So many they nearly gave me a heart attack. THAT BOOK IS NOT HEALTHY.

Expandspoilers and I mean BIG ONES go away if you have not read! )

- I am currently watching the third season of Six Feet Under. I can't believe I resisted watching this show for so long :O I somehow always thought it'd be boring. I'M SORRY I UNDERESTIMATED YOU. On the other hand, I don't know if I'd appreciated it this much if I'd have watched it a few years ago when it was on tv.
Expandspoilers for S1 and 2 and the first ep of S3 )
